Man arrested for allegedly k!lling girlfriend during HIV argument in Enugu

Police in Enugu State have arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified only as Chinyere, at his residence in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.

The state police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed the arrest at the command’s headquarters in GRA, Enugu, saying the incident allegedly occurred on September 19.

According to Ndukwe, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly killed the woman following an argument over who infected whom with HIV.

He said the suspect allegedly struck the woman on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death, before wrapping her body in nylon and locking it inside a toilet.

The police spokesperson said neighbours were alerted by an offensive odour from the apartment and forced the door open, where they allegedly discovered the body and apprehended the suspect before the arrival of the police.

Ndukwe added that the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and subsequently re-arrested by operatives of the Awkunanaw Police Division.

He said the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation, while the deceased’s body had been deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy as efforts continued to locate her relatives.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and ensure the suspect is arraigned after the investigation.

The command also advised young women to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements and exercise caution in their relationships and interactions.
